Protection of Retina by αB Crystallin in Sodium Iodate Induced Retinal Degeneration

Abstract: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness in the developed world. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a critical site of pathology in AMD and αB crystallin expression is increased in RPE and associated drusen in AMD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of αB crystallin in sodium iodate (NaIO3)-induced retinal degeneration, a model of AMD in which the primary site of pathology is the RPE. Dose dependent effects of intravenous NaIO3 (20-70 mg/kg) on development … Show more

“…A recent study showed that Crystallins may play a critical role in the protection against oxidative stress and retinal degeneration [46]. In our study we were similarly able to observe the involvement of Gamma-crystallin D in retinal structural changes induced by UVA and UVB.…”

“…This notion is reinforced by the fact that silencing of αBC exacerbates oxidative stress. whereas the over-expression has the opposite effect [33]. In the present study, we have shown that αBC treatment enhances retinal SOD activity and reduces MDA concentration in MNU administered mice.…”

“…17 After a 48-hour incubation in medium with or without recombinant TGF-b2 or BMP4, total cell lysates were extracted with lysis buffer. In separate experiments, empty vector or aB-crystallin transfected cells were treated with 10 ng TGF-b2 for 2 hours and nuclear and cytosolic fractions were separated.…”
