Protection of Petroleum Pipeline Carbon Steel Alloys with New Modified Core‐Shell Magnetite Nanogel against Corrosion in Acidic Medium

Abstract: New method was used to prepare magnetite nanoparticle based on reduction of Fe(III) ions with potassium iodide to produce Fe3O4nanoparticle. The prepared magnetite was stabilized with cross-linked polymer based on 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS to prepare novel core-shell nanogel. In this respect, Fe3O4/poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) (PAMPS) magnetic nanogels with controllable particle size produced via free aqueous polymerization at 65°C have been developed for the first ti… Show more

“…Herein we extend the previous works [ 26 , 30 , 31 , 32 ] to modify the surface of magnetite nanoparticles using a new method for synthesizing stabilized magnetic nanoparticle colloids. A new class of monodisperse water-soluble magnetite nanoparticles was prepared by a simple and cheap co-precipitation method.…”

“…In this way, the miniemulsion polymerization process will take place in the styrene (St) monomer droplets containing the magnetite particles. The hydrophobic magnetite coated nanoparticles were prepared according to a modified previous method [22] based on the cheapest and most environmentally friendly co-precipitation method, which involves the simultaneous precipitation of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ions after reaction of KI with FeCl 3 . The iodine was separated during the reaction by precipitation and the oleic acid-coated magnetite was produced after precipitation in basic aqueous media in the presence of oleic acid as stabilizer.…”

“…To enhance the compatibility between the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and water, and to control and/or tailor of the surface properties of the nanoparticles, surface modification is a necessity for magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The surfaces of nanoparticles are covered by a capping shell, which inhibits the agglomeration and oxidation of nanoparticles and enhances the application of MC as an anticorrosive coating [21,22]. Ferromagnetic magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) with a cross-linked polymer nanogel is considered the most interesting among the magnetic nanogels.…”

“…It is well known that the iron metal forms self-adhering films when exposed to moisture and oxygen based on magnetite to act as protective film from corrosive environment but this film was unstable to acidic solutions and salts [16]. Modified magnetite nanoparticles were previously used as corrosion inhibitors [10,17]. However, the magnetite nanoparticles are unstable in air and easily agglomerated after synthesis.…”
