Protection of Honeycomb Sandwich Armours Against the Ballistic Attacks

Abstract: Evolution of the ballistic threat has taken place, principally, in the contexts of general war, terrorism and crime. The threat has been developed to cause injury or damage to personal, land vehicles, ships, aircraft and structures. Inert projectiles will cause only localized damage to structural targets and therefore normally constitute a less potent threat to the survival of the structure than rounds which have high explosive contents. This paper describes the spectrum of ballistic threats on armoured struct… Show more

“…2-a. The role of the ceramic layer is to distort the nose of the bullet and increase the surface area of the contact between the bullet and layer shear thickening, absorbing shock by fibers and rubber and stopping the bullet [10]. Alternating layers of fiber Kevlar and rubber (B), the fiber (Kevlar) was treated with sulfuric acid concentration (60%) (H2SO4) to give good adhesive with natural rubber whose owns content 24 phr sulfur and 30 phr carbon black, the first part after assembly and vulcanization becomes as in Fig.…”

“…H. M. El-Fayad et al [10] developed a model to simulate sandwich honeycomb armors by using (Ansys software) from ceramic materials (SiC) and Steel, used to resist various weapons. The results show a reduction in projectile exit velocity by about 29.4% and 39.6% for ceramic thicknesses 10 mm and 20 mm, respectively.…”

[4] Alternating layers of fiber Kevlar and rubber (B), the fiber (Kevlar) was treated with sulfuric acid concentration (60%) (H2SO4), where the fabrics were cleaned with ethanol alcohol to remove dust and dirt from the fabrics, then soaked in the acid for 1 hour, washed with distilled water, and dried in the drying oven. The purpose of these treatments is to achieve better bonding of the fabric with the rubber layers.…”
