The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates enable a highly sensitive detection of furfural in the transformer oil. However, detection substrates with long-term stability are still extremely challenging. In this work, we anchored the thiol-containing coupling agents 2, 5-dimercapto-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole (DMTD) and 1, 4-benzenedithiol (BDT) on the surface of bubble copper (B-Cu) and flower-like silver nanoparticles (F-Ag), respectively. The three-dimensional SERS detection substrates with long-term stability by using a combination of chemical reduction and self-assembly methods were constructed. The substrate has a minimum detection limit of 10 −9 M for rhodamine B in oil with an enhancement factor of up to 2.23 � 10 7 . Importantly, the three-crystal B-Cu@F-Ag 1 @Au 5 substrate was used for the detection of furfural in the transformer oil with a detection limit of 2 mg/L and a relative standard deviation value of 2.46%. After 60 days of a simulated operation, the detection signal of furfural in the transformer oil samples at 75°C and still reached the initial value of 77.53%, indicating that the substrate has a good long-term stability. This triple frame structured SERS detection platform shows great potential in tracking furfural in the aging transformer oil mixing systems. | INTRODUCTIONPower transformers are the core equipment in the power transmission systems. During the actual operation of a transformer, its oil-paper insulation system is subjected to electrical, thermal and mechanical stress, and it produces aging characteristics [1][2][3][4]. As a typical aging characteristic, furfural can be used to accurately evaluate the aging degree of the transformer insulation system [5,6]. Chromatographic based spectrophotometry and high-performance liquid chromatography are routine detection methods for furfural in the transformer oil. These methods are expensive, and they are easily affected by the surrounding environmental factors and cannot complete the detection of a complex oil system [7,8]. To achieve a nondestructive and in situ detection of furfural dissolved in oil, Toshihiro et al. applied laser Raman spectroscopy to detect the standard sample of furfural in the transformer oil for the first time, and the minimum detection limit could reach only 104 mg/L [9], which cannot meet the furfural detection accuracy standard (4 mg/L) of the transformer oil after severe aging.This is an open access article under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.

Developing scalable and high-performance underwater adhesives is important in various biomedical and industrial applications. However, despite massive efforts, the realization of such adhesives remains a challenging task, as mainly imposed by the difficulty in balancing the interfacial and bulk properties via an efficient way.Here, we report a facile yet effective strategy to construct a novel underwater adhesive with multiple advantaged performances by virtue of heterocyclic chemistry. This adhesive is designed with the cooperation of a heterocycle-based versatile adhesive functionality and an eco-friendly hydrophilic matrix with cross-linkable sites, which allows water absorption to destroy hydration layer, diverse molecular interactions to enhance interfacial adhesion, and abundant covalent crosslinks to strengthen bulk cohesion. Such a rational design endows the adhesive with strong underwater adhesion (up to 1.16 MPa for wood and 0.36 MPa for poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE)), long-term durability (maintaining pristine strength even after 4 months), and harsh-environment stability (salt, acidic/alkaline, low/high-temperature solutions). This strategy is also generic to derive more adhesive formulas, which offers a new direction for designing the next-generation underwater adhesives with high performance and scalability for practical applications.

The present research work undertakes the investigation of preparation of the polystyrene‐block‐poly (ethylene‐ran‐butylene)‐block‐polystyrene triblock (SEBS) copolymer coating on a copper surface (Cu‐SEBS) following a well‐defined immersion protocol. The SEBS ratio, drying temperature (Temp), and drying time (time) are the factors for the determination of the immersion protocol of the Cu‐SEBS electrode's preparation. To evaluate the effects of these factors on the anticorrosive behaviour of copper in NaCl 3 % solution and to determine the best conditions to produce a protective SEBS film on the copper surface (low corrosion rate), we used the experimental design and the central composite design (CCD). The response surface methodology (RSM) was used in this study as an optimization method and the Statgraphics software was used to treat experimental design data. The corrosion rate of Cu‐SEBS at the different runs of the experimental matrix was measured by voltammetry around the open circuit potential (OCP) (ΔE=±50 mV vs SCE). The analysis of variance, the Pareto graph and the figure of the main and combined effect of the experimental factors show that the SEBS rate is the most significant factor. The linear effect of time and Temp, the quadratic effect of SEBS ratio, and the interaction between SEBS ratio and the drying temperature is, even though important, less significant. The optimized parameters were determined to obtain the lower corrosion rate, which was a 3.059 % of SEBS ratio, 70.18 °C of drying temperature, and 21 min of drying time. Then, to confirm the model, an electrochemical investigation of SEBS‐coated copper at optimal conditions of immersion protocol (Cu‐SEBS‐Opt‐Cond) was successfully applied in a 3 wt % NaCl aqueous solution. The corrosion rate of Cu‐SEBS‐Opt‐Cond was obtained by voltammetry around the open circuit potential (OCP) equal 0.00023 mm year−1 which is close to that found by the experimental design. The measures of voltammetry around OCP, cyclic voltammetric (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed that the Cu‐SEBS‐Opt‐Cond electrode exhibited more stability and a much higher corrosion resistance than that observed for bare copper.
