“…[9][10][11][12][13][14] We therefore introduced the routine procedure of covering the bronchial anastomosis with vital tissue such as pedicled thymus flaps, muscle flap, or pericardial flaps in patients after neoadjuvant treatment including radiotherapy to protect the anastomosis. 15,16 Thirty-day mortality in these patients was not increased compared with the overall 30-day mortality (1%). Comparison of patients with or without neoadjuvant treatment was not statistically significant.…”

“…As far as pericardium is concerned, in the current literature, the use of pericardial fat or pericardium itself is described for bronchial stump coverage during pneumonectomy to prevent the development of fistula and very seldom as the separate method of late PBF management . Frequent insufficiencies as regards the length, width, consistency, vascularisation and the risk for pericarditis are mentioned among the drawbacks of pericardial flaps . However, these remarks are related to flaps such as pericardial fat and pleural but not to pericardial flaps.…”

“…On the other hand, the intercostal, sternocleidomastoid, and other muscles wrapping have already been used as a facilitating method of vascularization for ischemic airway (28–31). Rendina et al.…”

“…Rendina et al. have demonstrated that a fine vascular network develops around the anastomosis early in the post‐operative period by means of the arteriographic study of the intercostal artery (31). Pedicled muscle flaps based on intercostal artery and vein are flexible and easy to transpose around the intrathoracic airway.…”
