p-Cycles offer ring-like switching speed and meshlike spare capacity efficiency for protecting network against link failures. This makes them extremely efficient and effective protection technique. p-Cycles can also protect all the links in a network against simultaneous failures of multiple links. But it has been mostly studied for single link failure scenarios in the networks with the objective to minimize spare capacity under the condition of 100% restorability. For large networks, use of p-cycles is difficult because their optimization requires an excessive amount of time as the number of variables in the corresponding Integer Linear Program (ILP) increase with the increase in the network size. In a real-time network situation, setting up a highly efficient protection in a short time is essential. Thus, we introduce a network sub-graphing approach, in which a network is segmented into smaller parts based on certain network attributes. Then, an optimal solution is found for each subgraph. Finally, the solutions for all the sub-graphs is combined to get a sub-optimal solution for the whole network. We achieved better computational efficiency at the expense of marginal spare capacity increases with this approach.

To protect wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks, pre-configured protection cycles (p-cycles) found to be very speedy and efficient. To implement p-cycles in any network, we may or may not deploy wavelength converters. As the cost of wavelength converters is quite high, fully equipping the networks with wavelength converters makes it very costly. So, instead of making the network 100% wavelength convertible, we are making network convertible in some variation. We compare the spare capacity in terms of route km of fiber length and the number of wavelength converter required for the same. We ensure that making the network wavelength convertible to some extent, i.e., 50% also can perform better without much affecting spare capacity. Also, the hardware cost of converters can be reduced much with lesser use of wavelength converters.

Abstract:In this study, a geographic information system (GIS)-based novel fiber network monitoring system has been developed to improve the operation and maintenance of fiber optic networks (FONs). The main aim of the developed system is to provide the required capabilities for both detailed digital modeling and central monitoring of FONs. The system can perform scheduled measurements and dispatch alarms if any fault or degradation is detected in the concerned FON. It also indicates the alarm locations on a map as a considerable contribution to decreasing mean time to repair.The developed monitoring system has more security features than others.
