“…According to reports in the pertinent literature, cysteine proteases released by F. hepatica play a key role in parasite feeding, migration through host tissues and immune evasion and they are considered good vaccine candidates [32]. Cysteine proteases have been used as vaccine candidates in immunisation trials involving experimental models such as cattle and sheep and using different adjuvants, resulting in up to 79% protection [33]–[38]. The rationale behind selecting proteins that could be secreted by F. hepatica has been based on the fact that these proteins are exposed to a host’s immune system, making them easily recognisable.…”
