Prosthetic Rehabilitation of a Lateral Midfacial Defect Combined with Hemimandibulectomy using Multiple/Sectional Prosthesis

Abstract: Extraoral maxillofacial rehabilitation of patients with large midfacial defects has always perplexed the prosthodontist. Retention of such large facial prosthesis can be challenging due to its increased size and weight. This clinical report describes the technique of prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with large midfacial defect using a hollow light-weight intraoral-extraoral combination prosthesis utilizing rare-earth magnets as a retention tool. This prosthesis dramatically improved the function, estheti… Show more

“…The patient reported in this article lost his right maxilla, zygoma-associated structures, and orbital contents due to resection of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. This type of midfacial defect can be managed by using zygomatic and pterygoid implants [ 10 - 11 ], combination prostheses [ 5 ], magnets, adhesives, elastics, spectacles, magnets, key-lock mechanisms, and the combinations of many other auxiliary retentive aids. According to Gaur V et al using one-piece implants with bicortical anchorage could be an additional tool in maxillofacial defect reconstruction [ 5 ].…”
