Prosthesis-user-in-the-loop: User-centered design parameters and visual simulation

Abstract: After an amputation, processes of change in the body image as well as a change in body scheme have direct influences on the quality of living in every patient. Within this paper, a paradigm of experimental induced body illusion (the Rubber Hand Illusion, RHI) is integrated in a prosthetic hardware simulator concept. This concept combines biodynamical and visual feedback to enhance the quality of rehabilitation and to integrate patients' needs into the development of prostheses aiming on user-centered solutions… Show more

“…Until now, this is questionnaires to survey the user's requirements in the beginning of the development and for an evaluation of prototypes in clinical evaluations in the end of this process. The Prosthesis-User-in-the-Loop simulator concept proposed by the authors [12,13], aims at supporting user-centered prosthetic design by integrating the users to the development process. Therefore, it provides simulations of the biomechanical behavior of prostheses for the user in several gait scenarios.…”

“…UCD can imp the amputees' needs into the prosthesis' properties In this paper, items of a newly developed questionnaire presented with the focus on transfemoral prosthetic users and their satisfaction in daily living. A correlation matrix may demonstrate the acceptance of dissatisfaction extent and the Prosthesis-User-in-the-Loop simulator co cept [12,13] may give ideas to overcome the issues related to non user centered development in the design of a reh bilitation process in lower limb amputees.…”

“…In order to investigate different types of prostheses, the models in the real time control system can be changed. A holistic illusion of walking with the simulated prosthesis is established by adding a visual simulation unit as proposed in [15] and hiding the components for the biodynamical feedback in a blackbox. The combination of biomechanical and visual simulation should provide the experience of physical integrity for the user while testing the real behaviour of the investigated prosthesis in virtual reality.…”

“…The combination of biomechanical and visual simulation should provide the experience of physical integrity for the user while testing the real behaviour of the investigated prosthesis in virtual reality. Hence, the functionality of the prosthesis can be isolated from other possibly correlated factors for an assessment by the user [15]. During the experiments the user is secured in a user safeguarding unit.…”
