© iForest -Biogeosciences and Forestry IntroductionForest road network investigations provide a primary method for evaluating forest accessibility in terms of on-road transportation and forest operations. Forest roads play a dual role in providing both access to the forest and transportation mobility and, together with extraction routes, normally form a relatively even network in the forest. A forest road network is therefore the result of the combination between the main forest roads and the timber extraction routes (Heinimann 1998).Forest road network, which includes both forest and secondary public roads, has received much attention in recent years due to its function and effect on forested rural landscapes and the related environment (Lugo & Gucinski 2000, Gumus et al. 2008) and its primary role in the efficiency of logging operations and forest transportation (Heinimann 1998). As a consequence, the importance of the multi-functional role of the forest road network has been widely recognized, being the interface between forested lands and the roads. It provides access not only for timber extraction and management but also for water protection and wildlife habitat improvement, fire control and many recreational activities (Akay & Sessions 2004).On the other hand, the presence of roads has many undesirable effects on both biotic and abiotic components of the forest. Several reviews have been published in the literature about the negative effects of forest roads (Coffin 2007, Forman & Alexander 1998. As an example, there has been considerable interest in the analysis of the forest road network as a source of accelerated soil erosion and the production of sediment (Bilby et al. 1989, Gucinski et al. 2001, also using GIS models (Skaugset et al. 2011).The maintenance and management of forest road networks are also an essential element to be investigated (Potočnik et al. 2005a), and have recently been analyzed by Coulter et al. (2006) with the intent of protecting road infrastructure and limiting negative environmental effects by considering non-economic benefits. Furthermore, an assessment of the impact of vehicle traffic moving through a designated area via a road network involves specific problems of forest management.Traffic increases sediment generation rates through detachment, abrasion and crushing of the road surface material (Sheridan et al. 2006). The assessment and subsequent prevention of soil erosion from forest roads requires an understanding of how road design and maintenance affect sediment production (Luce & Black 1999a). Empirical evidence providing an insight into how sediment yield is affected by traffic is reported by Bilby et al. (1989) who highlighted that the amount of sediment produced is also related to traffic rate. Portugal.Orographic characteristics, such as slope and watershed systems features were considered. The different manual and mechanical timber extraction and concentration methods were also considered. The different typologies of roads network to access forests were also introduced in the models. The analysis allowed identifying forest areas with different accessibilities and orographic restrictions. Performed analysis also allowed the planning of additional roads necessary for timber extraction optimization, considering optimized site-by-site timber extraction methods. The proposal of accessibility improvement through new roads construction was also considered important for forest fire prevention and for fire direct combat. However, the present proposal of accessibility improvement is merely an academic exercise because nature conservation restrictions severely limit the construction of new forest roads. This methodological approach should be tested in other mountainous forest regions throughout Europe.

Over the centuries, alongside multiple changes in socio-economical conditions, needs and technical possibilities, Italian forest and forest management have gone through a dynamic and complex evolution process. In the last decade, forest lands in Italy have been constantly growing and nowadays cover almost 11 million hectars, accounting for 36.4% of the total National territory. Several quantitative and qualitative aspects of forest resources, regarding species composition, actual and available stock, ownership, volume of utilization, accessibility, terrain features and others, have been described through the analysis of the National Forest Inventory (INFC2005). The most represented forest typology is »coppice with standards«, while many forests are in a mature stage, waiting for conversion to transitional stands. Concerning forest logging, full length harvesting and winching-skidding extraction are the most widespread systems, but in many areas the low-openness conditions represent a limiting factor for logging distances, expecially in high slope classes, where sustainable and cost-effective operations are primary. The modern solutions allowed by technological progress, in addition to the growing environmental awareness and need of a sustainable management at multiple level require an efficient forest communications management and professional formation of operators, in a challenging scenario that Italy is called to approach.
