Thermal behaviour of various urban environments may increase the surrounding temperature and induce the urban heat island phenomenon. This study carried out local climatic measurements on different urban environments and evaluated their thermal comfort performance. The monitoring sites were selected on the basis of the characteristics of vegetated area, built-up environment and open space areas. Results showed that the temperature variations between vegetated areas and open spaces were lower on average at about 5°C and 3.5°C, respectively. The higher temperatures in built-up areas may be due to higher solar radiation exposure and reflection of long wave radiation from adjacent buildings. Meanwhile, the open space faced the sky with no building obstructions and allowed a free flow of wind to cool down the surface temperature through convection and radiation. Furthermore, the discomfort index was calculated and its value lay within the category of ‘partially comfortable’ where people have adjusted to the local climate. Thus, urban greenery, the use of high albedo surface materials and proper implementation of urban geometry are important elements for a sustainable urban development with improved thermal comfort.

A wide diffusion of green envelopes in cities can be an opportunity to improve urban environment conditions and reduce negative effects of climate change. The green roof system is a widespread solution adopted all over the world due to the relative simplicity of installation and the large private and social benefits provided. Despite this, some factors hinder the diffusion of the green roof system, not only economic factors (due to the higher installation costs compare to a traditional roof solution), but also technical factors connected to lack of knowledge. The present paper investigates the factors influencing designers in the choice of a building roof systems, comparing a traditional solution and a greening system. The involvement of architects, engineers, and researchers allows the selection of the most important factors. Results of the study identifies their priority, and through a sustainability-based multicriteria analysis, the role played by each one in the decision process. This approach provides interesting hints to identify effective strategies to support a wider diffusion of greening systems for urban resilience.

Climate Change Adaptation Measures for Buildings—A Scoping Review

As the climate changes globally and locally, the built environment will be subject to different climatic exposure than in the past. Adaptation measures are required to ensure the long-term integrity and successful operation of the built environment. This study examines literature on climate adaptation measures for buildings through a scoping literature review. It is centered around the main journals in the field of climate adaptation of the built environment, then expanded to map the extent of scientific publications about climate adaptation in general. Studies that regard future climate scenarios have been of particular interest. The majority of the identified literature concerns climate change impacts on buildings in warm climates, with overheating being seen as the greatest challenge. Additionally, few empirical studies are found; most identified research is based on computer simulations or literature reviews. The volume of research on the consequences of climate change on buildings in cold regions is surprisingly small, considering the pecuniary stakes involved. The predictions of climate scenarios suggest regulatory/policy measures on climate adaptation should be taken as quickly as possible to avoid greater costs in the future. However, further research into future scenarios is also essential.
