Prospects of application of melanins as antiaging agents in elastomer compositions

Abstract: The paper presents findings of a study of physical-chemical properties of sunflower husk melanins, as well as their influence on the thermal oxidative aging resistance of elastomer compositions. It has been found that melanins reveal a high level of antioxidant activity and can be used as antiaging agents in elastomer compositions.

“…Due to the unique features of melanin that were revealed by studies of animal, fungal and synthetic melanins, perspectives to use it in a broad range of biomedical and technological applications has been demonstrated ( d’Ischia et al, 2015 ; Di Mauro et al, 2017 ; Vahidzadeh et al, 2018 ). Recently sunflower husks melanin was successfully used as a sorbent with high enterosorption efficiency and as an antiaging agent in elastomer compositions ( Gracheva and Zheltobryukhov, 2019 ; Kablov et al, 2019 ). Besides technological application, melanin is considered as a food supplement that can increase nutrition value of stable food, for example, the melanin isolated from black garlic ( Wang and Rhim, 2019 ).…”

“…Since plant melanin is present in most cases in low-cost agricultural waste products (e.g., grape pomace and sunflower seed husks), it has attracted special attention. The potential of melanin from sunflower husks as a sorbent with high enterosorption efficiency and as an antiaging agent in elastomer compositions has been demonstrated (Gracheva and Zheltobryukhov, 2019;Kablov et al, 2019).…”

“…Allomelanin is a dark, insoluble pigment that leads to brown and black seed color in plants. Despite its biomedical and technological applications as a unique material, natural melanin also has a wide range of biological activities and human health benefits, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-HIV, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anti-aging effects [14][15][16][17]. However, the biochemical and genetic aspects of melanin formation in plants have not been extensively studied because of the complex polymeric nature of melanin and the interference of other pigments.…”
