Prospects for Geography as an Interdisciplinary Discipline

Abstract: The drive to examine broad-ranging problems that encompass a complex mix of phenomena and processes has spurred the conduct of research that bridges traditional disciplines. Geographers have played active roles in many interdisciplinary projects, because geography itself is inherently interdisciplinary. Geography builds on major emphases in spatial analysis, human-environment interaction, and place-based and regional analyses to encourage communication and interaction with myriad other disciplines. The active … Show more

“…While each factor was analysed and considered separately, a triangulated approach to the final analysis achieved a greater depth of understanding. Consequently, the study spills across traditional disciplinary boundaries (Baerwald, 2010). The remainder of this chapter sets out the theories and methods that were combined to make up the overarching analytical framework.…”

“…Climate change research is an interdisciplinary fi eld, and understanding its social, political, and environmental implications requires integration across fi elds of research where different tools may be used to address common concerns [ Baerwald , 2010 ]. One of the many advantages of interdisciplinary approaches is that they open communication between complementary fi elds, fi lling knowledge gaps and facilitating progression within both individual fi elds and the broader fi eld of climate change research [ Ludwig et al ., 2011 ].…”
