Prospective Risk and Protective Factors for Juvenile Arrest Among Youth At Risk for Maltreatment

Abstract: This study aimed to prospectively identify ecological risk factors for juvenile arrest in a sample of youth at risk for maltreatment. Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detector analysis was performed with data from 592 youth from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect to identify the optimal combination of age 14 predictors of past-year arrest at age 16. Results extended previous research, which has identified being male, having more conduct disorder symptoms, suspension from school, perceived sch… Show more

“…Finally, some studies have sought to analyse gender differences in the impact of specific maltreatment types. Several such studies have highlighted the more detrimental impact of sexual abuse on youth offending among males, relative to females (Duke et al, 2010; Kim, 2005; Matta Oshima et al, 2014; Morrow et al, 2019).…”

“…Hunt and colleagues [20] found that childhood abuse (emotional and physical), and neglect (emotional and physical) were strongly associated with externalizing and internalizing behaviors in middle childhood as well. In addition, Morrow et al [21] examined the impact of exposure to violence and CD symptoms on juvenile arrest and found a direct relationship between these factors, further emphasizing the influence of ACEs on negative outcomes in youth.…”

“…In addition, Morrow et al. [21] examined the impact of exposure to violence and CD symptoms on juvenile arrest and found a direct relationship between these factors, further emphasizing the influence of ACEs on negative outcomes in youth. These studies provide substantial evidence for the association between ACEs and CD, highlighting the importance of addressing childhood experiences to prevent or mitigate the development of conduct disorder.…”

“…In addition, several studies have considered the consequences of maltreatment, trauma and ACEs in general for young people who offend (Ford et al, 2012; Fox et al, 2015; Malvaso et al, 2017). Recently, Morrow, Villodas and Cunius (2019) have stressed the importance of considering the complex interactions between risk factors for juvenile delinquency across multiple contexts. In contrast, growing up in a close-knit and supportive environment with non-authoritarian parents or guardians is considered a protective factor with respect to violent behaviour in adolescence (Baldry and Farrington, 2005; Schlack et al, 2013; Spriggs et al, 2007).…”
