Prospective randomized evaluation of diode‐laser and cryotherapy in prethreshold retinopathy of prematurity

Abstract: Excellent results are achieved if ROP is treated at the prethreshold stage with both indirect laser photocoagulation and cryotherapy. Although laser has definite advantages, cryotherapy can be considered as an alternative modality of treatment in developing countries due to economic reasons.

“…Besides the immediate short-term results it seems that laser therapy may also be beneficial in respect to longterm functional and visual outcome. Eyes treated with cryotherapy have been found to be significantly more myopic than those treated with laser photocoagulation (10)(11)(12)17) . Although laser has definite advantages, cryotherapy can be considered as an alternative modality of treatment in developing countries due to economic reasons (10)(11)(12) .…”

“…Laser has many advantages over cryotherapy. [1011] There is less post-treatment pain, adnexal edema, exudative retinal detachment, vitreoretinal traction, and vitreous hemorrhage, due to reduced breakdown of the blood-retinal barrier. Use of topical anesthesia reduces systemic complications such as bradycardia or apnea.…”
