Prospective Evaluation of Visual Acuity Agreement Between Standard Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study Chart and a Handheld Equivalent in Eyes With Retinal Pathology

Abstract: The strong correlation between measured visual acuity using the ETDRS and handheld equivalent suggests that they may be used interchangeably, with accurate measurements. Potential benefits of this device include convenience and portability, as well as the ability to assess ETDRS visual acuity without a dedicated testing lane.

“…At referral an ophthalmological examination was performed in both eyes and included measurement of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) using charts complying with the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) standard (Rahimy et al. 2015). After dilatation of the pupils using phenylephrine 10% (Amgros I/S, Copenhagen, Denmark) and tropicamide 1% (Alcon, Copenhagen, Denmark), the patients were subjected to slit‐lamp examination, 90D lens biomicroscopy of the retina and 60 degrees fundus photography (Canon CF 60Z; Canon, Amstelveen, the Netherlands).…”

“…10 Using this technique, visual acuity is expressed on a scale between 0 and 100 corresponding to visual acuities between 0.02 and 2.0, and the values can be handled arithmetically without logarithmic transformation. The pupils were dilated using tropicamide 1% (Alcon, Copenhagen, Denmark) and phenylephrine 10% (Amgros I/ S, Copenhagen, Denmark) eye drops.…”
