Prospective community‐based cluster census and case‐control study of stillbirths and neonatal deaths in the West Bank and Gaza Strip

Abstract: Obstetric complications and newborn illnesses amenable to basic medical interventions underlie most perinatal deaths. Yet, despite good access to maternal and newborn care in many transitional countries, perinatal mortality is often not monitored in these settings. The present study identified risk factors for perinatal death and the level and causes of stillbirths and neonatal deaths in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Baseline and follow-up censuses with prospective monitoring of pregnant women and newborns fro… Show more

“…A reduction of hospital-based NMR may significantly impact national neonatal survival. Malpresentation was identified in this study as associated a 4-fold increased risk for stillbirth, which is in agreement with previous findings in Ethiopia, [20] the West Bank, [17] and India [16]. A stronger emphases on early diagnosis, referral, and proper obstetrical management of malpresentation/dystocia may have reduced mortality rates significantly in this population.…”

“…The first was published in 1991 in India [16]. Another recent study in the West Bank and Gaza Strip was based on prospective data collected at the household level [17]. Our study is the only one in the literature using prospectively collected data that has linked specific maternal characteristics and diagnoses to the incidence of neonatal asphyxia as an outcome.…”

“…Since the mid-1990s, there has been a heightened awareness of the RH issues that affect populations during humanitarian crises. These include incidences of rape and GBV (McGinn 2000, Shanks and Schull 2000, Gasseer et al 2004, Rees et al 2005, Felten-Biermann 2006, Steiner et al 2009), increased transmission of HIV/AIDS (Khaw et al 2000, Salama and Dondero 2001, Hankins et al 2002, Mock et al 2004, Spiegel 2004, Karkee 2006, Samuels et al 2008, Kim et al 2009) and increases in maternal and neonatal mortality (Coghlan et al 2006, Kalter et al 2008.…”

“…The verbal autopsy instruments used for obtaining information about stillbirths and newborn deaths were based on adaptations of WHO recommended instruments used for assessing neonatal deaths and stillbirths. [21][22][23] The primary outcome of the trial was perinatal and all-cause neonatal mortality.…”
