Abstract: More well-designed studies with an adequate statistical power are needed to compare the allergy preventive effect of partially and extensively hydrolysed formulas with a standard infant formula.

“…The value of hypo-allergic diets to mothers during breast feeding is still a matter of debate, and they seem only to be of value if the infant already suffers from obvious allergic symptoms [13]. Hypo-allergic formulae have an inhibitory effect upon the development of cow's milk allergy [7,37]. Moreover, late introduction (>age of 6 months) of solid foods seem to be advisable in atopic infants [10,20].…”

“…In the studies conducted to date, there are major differences in feeding formulations such that the preventive effect of HF in high-risk infants is still inconclusive [12,14]. Further studies are necessary to assess relevant outcomes of feeding HF compared to regular cow’s milk infant formula (CM).…”

“…In only one single trial, an extensive hydrolysate was compared to a partial hydrolysate, whereas an extensive hydrolysate was compared to an ultra®ltrated formula in another trial [4]. So, the authors came to the logical conclusion that much more well-designed studies are needed before conclusions can be drawn and recommendations proposed [4]. In the meantime, the results of an interesting trial comparing a partial hydrolysate to two extensive hydrolysates have been published [2].…”

“…In fact, this means that there are only two hydrolysates (Nutramigen and Nestle -HA) that have been clinically tested in more than one published prospective cohort study in infants at risk for atopy. In only one single trial, an extensive hydrolysate was compared to a partial hydrolysate, whereas an extensive hydrolysate was compared to an ultra®ltrated formula in another trial [4]. So, the authors came to the logical conclusion that much more well-designed studies are needed before conclusions can be drawn and recommendations proposed [4].…”
