Prospective Association Between Inflammatory Markers and Knee Cartilage Volume Loss and Pain Trajectory

Abstract: Introduction: Inflammation has been suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis and pain. We sought to explore the associations between inflammatory serum markers and magnetic resonance imaging-defined long-term structural change and pain trajectory. Methods: A total of 169 randomly selected participants (mean age 63 years; 47% female) from a prospective cohort study were included in this study. Circulating levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a) and high-sensiti… Show more

“…28 The MR image sequence used for the examinations included a T1-weighted fat saturation three-dimensional (3D) gradient-recalled acquisition in the steady-state and a T2-weighted fat saturation 2D fast spin-echo. 10 Knee CV. A trained observer analyzed knee CV on T1-weighted MR images using the Osiris software (University of Geneva).…”

“…[4][5][6] Inflammatory indicators, such as interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor α, play crucial roles as mediators in both local and systemic immune responses, contributing to structural alterations and clinical manifestations in OA. [7][8][9][10] The dietary inflammatory index (DII) serves as a tool for evaluating an individual's overall dietary pattern and its potential impact on inflammation. 11 The DII scores were developed using peer-reviewed articles by assigning a score to each food component that has been found to have robust evidence for its ability to influence systemic inflammation.…”

“…have indicated that blocking the IL-17 signaling pathway might contribute to treating OA pain due to the strong correlation between IL-17 levels and OA pain based on the WOMAC scale [ 54 ]. Increased levels of inflammatory mediators promote the expression of proteolytic enzymes, such as MMPs and ADAMTs [ 55 ].…”
