Prospect of natural products in glioma: A novel avenue in glioma management

Abstract: Glioma is one of the most perplexing cancers because of its infiltrating nature, molecular signaling, and location in central nervous system. Blood-brain barrier acts as a natural barrier to the glioma making it difficult to access by conventional chemotherapy. Clinicians are using natural compounds or their derivatives for several diseases including different cancers. However, the feasibility of using natural compounds in glioma is not explored in details. Natural compounds can act over a wide variety of sign… Show more

“…Glioma is a fatal brain tumor, which is the fourth leading cause of tumor-related death due to its invasive nature, molecular signals and the location of the central nervous system ( 27 ). In addition to causing death, seizures are common symptoms that seriously affect the lives of patients and their families ( 28 ).…”

“…6 However, glioma is located in the sensitive central nervous system, so it is difficult for conventional chemotherapy to break through the blood-brain barrier and exert its medicinal properties, which appeals for new treatment strategies. 7 We would explore the potential therapeutic direction by studying the molecular mechanism of glioma, which is of great value for the treatment of glioma.…”

“…TCM is considered as good sources of anti‐tumour drug candidates since most of them are multi‐target and low toxic. More importantly, most TCM possess good ability to penetrate blood‐brain barrier, which is particularly benefit in treating gliomas 48 . To date, a large number of TCM databases have been established, 49‐51 providing extensive natural‐compound candidates for the discovery of novel drugs.…”
