Prospect and barrier of 3D concrete: a systematic review

Abstract: This paper aims to explore the current state of the art and potential of 3D concrete printing and its use in large-scale applications. The study analysed 373 academic research, all of which were obtained from the Scopus database. The review conducted on some crucial issues on development of 3D concrete that included materials and their desirable properties, printer nozzle developments, reinforcement in printing, geopolymers as printing materials, and the use of coarse graded aggregates. This study provides res… Show more

“…There are numerous requirements that must be satisfied for the 3D concrete to have an "ideal" mix design, depending on whether the mix is designed for workability or compressive strength. For compressive strength, concrete's flowability and setting rate are maximized; nevertheless, for workability, pourability is prioritized and a sufficient setting rate is maintained (Malaeb et al 2019;Strohle et al 2023).…”

“…Several literature reviews have explored the integration of concrete additive manufacturing into the construction industry so far. Some reviews have focused on the overall implementation to highlight the general potential, future challenges, or barriers of AM [12][13][14][15][16]. Others have focused more on the differences between the AM methods or their underlying material properties [17][18][19].…”
