Prosody and ideologies of embodiment: Variation in the use of pitch and articulation rate among fitness instructors

Abstract: This article discusses semiotic connections among linguistic prosody, the body, and forms of physical activity. A quantitative study of the instructional styles of bodybuilding and yoga instructors on YouTube shows that bodybuilding instructors employ faster articulation rates and higher pitch (F0) than yoga instructors. We argue that articulation rate and pitch become semiotically linked to notions of energy, and the differences in the instructors’ styles are rooted in differences in levels of embodied energy… Show more

“…We argue that, at least in certain cases, the non-referential linguistic sign can come to articulate social distinction by virtue of being tied to particular forms of bodily enactment, a product of speakers adopting embodied interactional styles in order to differentiate themselves from others in the social landscape (cf. Esposito & Gratton, 2020). In this respect, we hope to have demonstrated the potential relevance of reading language through the body (Bucholtz & Hall, 2016) and to have promoted the idea that sound change may not always (or not only) be about the sounds themselves, but also about the bodies that sounds emanate from.…”

“…This perspective is particularly relevant in the analysis of high performance (Coupland, 2007), where the coherence of the stylistic ensemble is often carefully crafted and closely scrutinized. Recent sociolinguistic research on mediatized/high performance has successfully demonstrated how cross-modal stylistic practices help contextualize the social meaning of a linguistic style (Esposito & Gratton, 2022;Lin & Chan, 2022;Starr et al, 2020). However, less explored in the literature is how language variation serves as a vehicle for social changes at the level of persona.…”

“…Although recent third‐wave studies on mediatized performance have addressed the stylistic contrast among different personae (D'Onofrio & Stecker, 2022; Esposito & Gratton, 2022), little work has examined how the interaction between coexisting personae shapes their shared semiotic landscape. An exception is Starr et al.’s (2020) work, where they discuss two types of personae in the emerging Chinese ASMR community: the calm and professional persona of conventional ASMR performers and the naïve, spoiled “camgirl” persona of sexual ASMR performers.…”
