The current analog system for managing educational certificates was unreliable and slow. Students have to request their official transcripts from their university registrar and pay their fees for each copy of the transcript requested. The person who has acquired the credentials should be in charge of them, but most of the time the students have to rely on third parties, such as universities or employers to store, verify and validate the credentials. Employers and universities still at times need to call the issuing authority of the certificate if they want to be sure that the transcript was not faked. It’s complicated and tedious, which is one of the major factors for fraud. Making certificates easily verifiable and transferable is one advantage of digital systems. There are several advantages of creating a digital infrastructure for certificates, but the stakes are high as such systems will grow forward to represent our professional reputations. When proposing a digital method of processing certificates, the elimination of counterfeit certificates from the system should be given top priority. Using a hash-based storage method to assure the authenticity and security of digital content kept on the platform, colleges can submit student certificates and authenticate certificates from other member universities. A permissioned blockchain-based system is employed in the proposed system for the safe verification of academic degrees. The Raft ordering service is used to handle numerous distributed orderers. Universities can upload their student's credentials and validate the certifications of other member universities. A hash-based storage system is used to store the digital contents of the certificate in order to guarantee its authenticity and security. The certificate will be hashed using the SHA-256 technique, then stored in a blockchain. The student can use this hash value to further verify their certificate. The university's reputation is determined using the Beta Reputation Algorithm. This is done in order to avoid or remove the network organization that helps phoney certificates or fake validation. The system can be accessed from any location in the globe if it is set up in a cloud environment.

The rapid advances in Blockchain technology have impacted various areas, including financial, healthcare, and supply chain systems. Due to its unique characteristics, such as decentralization, trustworthiness, and security, this technology has recently been used in education, particularly in the verification of academic certificates. A certificate from an academic institution is a crucial document that could give someone access to new prospects. It frequently serves as a great starting point for choosing candidates during the recruitment process. Due to the lack of an effective anti-forging mechanism, academic certificates are vulnerable to fraud, forgery, and imitation. To combat this trend, educational institutions have implemented methods that often entail a third party verifying the legitimacy of academic certificates. A review of reference studies was conducted for this purpose. Many databases and papers that focused on blockchain in academic certificate verification and made important contributions rather than just making general statements about the topic were chosen. This paper investigates the benefits and challenges of blockchain technology in academic certificate verification. In the results obtained, it has been suggested that while blockchain technology in academic degree verification is still a new field, it holds a lot of promise for the academic certificate verification process as a whole. Finally, to avoid fake documents, this review paper focuses on papers related to the Academic Certificate Authenticity System (ACAS) using blockchain technology.

One of the major challenges the university faces is to provide real-time verification of their student's degree certification upon request by other parties. Conventional verification systems are typically costly, time-consuming and bureaucratic against certificate credential misconduct. In addition, the forgery of graduation degree certificates has become more efficient due to easy-to-use scanning, editing, and printing technologies. Therefore, this research proposes verifying Ph.D. certificates using QR codes on the Ethereum blockchain to address certificate verification challenges. Blockchain technology ensures tamper-proof and decentralized management of degree certificates as the certificates stored on the blockchain are replicated across the network. The issuance of certificates requires the use of the issuer's private key, thus preventing forgery. The system was developed using Solidity for the smart contract, PHP, HTML/CSS for the web-based implementation, and MetaMask for blockchain integration. User testing confirmed the successful implementation and functionality of the system. Users can add, update, and delete certificates, generate and scan QR codes, and receive instant verification feedback. The verification system effectively meets all requirements, providing a robust solution for validating Ph.D. certificates. Future research may focus on scalability and adoption, privacy and data protection, user experience, and integration with existing systems. Other researchers can optimize the verification system for widespread adoption and utilization by exploring these areas. This research contributes to securing and efficiently verifying academic certificates using QR codes on the Ethereum blockchain. Ultimately, this work advances the field of certificate verification and promotes trust in academic credentials.
