Proposed Revision of the Icrp Model for Inhaled Mercury Vapor

Abstract: A critical review of the literature on the biokinetics of inhaled mercury vapor was performed as part of an accident analysis for the Spallation Neutron Source to be built at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It was concluded that current models for inhaled mercury vapor do not accurately describe the distribution or residence time of mercury deposited in the respiratory tract. This paper proposes a model that is more consistent with collective information on the fate of inhaled mercury vapor in laboratory animal… Show more

“…The ICRP's assumptions are not consistent with current information on the gross distribution or residence time of mercury vapor in the respiratory tract (Leggett et al, 2001). It appears that inhaled mercury vapor deposits largely in the AI region, that most of the deposited mercury is nearly instantaneously absorbed to blood, and that the remainder may have multiple components of retention in the lungs.…”

“…The model incorporated the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) lung model [28]. The Hg vapor inhalation model was implemented using the Virtual Human PSE Java client interface to compute human Hg vapor uptake, retention, and excretion [29]. Since the model for Hg vapor is linear, it was implemented in Java by providing the transfer matrix using the PhysioML file.…”

“…When atmospheric Hg is inhaled, approximately 80% of it is deposited in the respiratory tract. Then, most (70%) of the deposited Hg is absorbed into the blood almost instantly, whereas the remainder is further absorbed over the course of several hours or days 4 …”
