Proposed correlation of modern processing principles for Ayurvedic herbal drug manufacturing: A systematic review

Abstract: Quality Ayurvedic herbal medicines are potential, low-cost solutions for addressing contemporary healthcare needs of both Indian and global community. Correlating Ayurvedic herbal preparations with modern processing principles (MPPs) can help develop new and use appropriate technology for scaling up production of the medicines, which is necessary to meet the growing demand. Understanding the fundamental Ayurvedic principles behind formulation and processing is also important for improving the dosage forms. Eve… Show more

“…Numerous phytocompounds present in medicinal herbs have undergone extensive investigation to elucidate their molecular targets, aiming to establish an alternative strategy for targeted cancer treatments [ 9 , 28 ]. Nonetheless, in folk or Ayurveda medicine, medicinal plants are traditionally harvested and subjected to solute diffusion with ethanol for a defined period before storage, prior to their eventual application [ 29 ]. Following Ayurvedic herbal drug processing, to improve the mobility of the phytochemical compounds, characterized as medium-polarity molecules, from the medicinal plants to the solvent and enhance cell permeability, 80% ethanol was used for the extraction of three medicinal plants in our study.…”

“…This clearly provides evidence that organic solvent extraction is not defined in Ayurveda for most of the herbal medicines and possibly the water/aqueous extraction procedures yield herbal medicines that are efficacious in treating diseases/disorders. [ 3 ] In addition, few scientific reports on the pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-diabetic, immune modulatory and anti-depressant activity of aqueous extracts of C. longa are available. [ 4 5 6 7 ]…”
