Proposals for the Classification of the Acute Leukaemias French‐American‐British (FAB) Co‐operative Group

Abstract: A uniform system of classification and nomenclature of the acute leukaemias, at present lacking, should permit more accurate recording of the distribution of cases entered into clinical trials, and could provide a reference standard when newly developed cell-surface markers believed to characterize specific cell types are applied to cases of acute leukaemia. Proposals based on conventional morphological and cytochemical methods are offered following the study of peripheral blood and bone-marrow films from some… Show more

“…The diagnosis of ALL was made according to the French-American-British (FAB) criteria [15], and was based on morphologic evaluation of bone marrow smears as well as immunophenotyping, cytogenetic, and molecular genetic analysis of leukemic blast cells. ALL was diagnosed when bone marrow contained at least 25% lymphoblasts.…”

“…Two ml of cells (4 暳 10 6 cells) were transferred to a set of tubes, then different algal extracts (200 毺g/mL) were added to the propriate tubes as well as DMSO. The tubes were incubated at 37 曟 for 2 h. Then, in a test tube containing 80 毺L saline and 10 毺L trypan blue and 10 毺L of cell suspension were added and mixed then the number of living cells was calculated using a hemocytometer [23] .…”

“…Myelodysplastic syndromes are classified based on morphology and blast cell percentage in blood and bone marrow (BM; French American British (FAB) and World Health Organization (WHO) classifications; Bennett et al, 1976;Bennett, 2000). Main prognostic factors of MDS, for progression to AML and survival, include the number of cytopenias, the percentage of BM blasts and cytogenetic abnormalities.…”
