Proposal of Package-to-Product Indicator for Carbon Footprint Assessment with Focus on the Czech Republic

Abstract: Today, packaging is an integral part of most foods and beverages. However, excessive and just one-time applications of packaging can bring about indisputable environmental impacts in the form of large amounts of waste generated. If we want to monitor the environmental impacts of packaging materials, it is advisable to assess them in a complex way including not only the specific packaging but also specific products. No universal methodology currently exists that would enable this type of complex assessment rega… Show more

“…The PtP indicator was used for analysing the relation between the environmental impact caused by the product and its package. The PtP indicator was designed as the ratio of the result of the climate change indicator for the package (CC Pa ) and the result of the climate change indicator for the product (CC Pr ) [33]. Regarding the results of the climate change indicator, the PtP cc as indicator for the evaluation of the results of the climate change indicator is calculated according to Equation (1).…”

“…This indicator allows us to assess the environmental impacts of the whole life cycle of packaging materials related to the environmental impacts of the product. Although this indicator was used for the environmental assessment of packaging used in the food processing industry, it can also be used for products and packaging in other industries [32,33]. As was proposed before [32], the climate change indicator can be used as an indicator for environmental impact assessment according to the Product Environmental Footprint methodology [34].…”
