Proposal for a National Blueprint Framework to Monitor Progress on Water-Related Sustainable Development Goals in Europe

Abstract: The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) underpinned by 169 targets presents national governments with huge challenges for implementation. We developed a proposal for a National Blueprint Framework (NBF) with 24 water-related indicators, centered on SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation for all), each with a specific target. We applied the NBF to 28 EU Member States (EU-28) and conclude that: (1) The current SDG 6 indicators are useful for monitoring progress toward water-related targets but their usefulness ca… Show more

“…It may also imply the development of a modified version of the CBA for landlocked countries such as Mongolia, Afghanistan, Laos, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, etc. We conclude that the next most populated centers in Mongolia are Darkhan and Erdenet cities, for which we recommend the expansion of this study to these two cities because of the importance of IWRM and SDG6 for the general well-being of the people of Mongolia [34,39].…”

“…This disconnect is particularly important because, with challenges of water shortage and drought across California, the campuses in our study may be missing opportunities for leadership in modeling innovative stormwater capture and reuse practices which can affect broader management practices. This disconnect applies more broadly to California, the U.S., and global urban contexts in which current aging water infrastructure and lack of financing serves as a barrier to the adoption of innovative approaches and multi-functional investments that could more holistically address water pollution and water supply issues (Feingold et al 2017;Essex et al 2019;Sadoff et al 2020).…”

“…A City Blueprint Approach (CBA) is a tool for assessing the sustainability of urban water management with multiple indicators, which are standardized for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) on a city level [18,19,38,39]. The CBA reflects the wide scope and many stakeholders, and it covers a broad range of aspects, such as water security, water quality, drinking water, sanitation, infrastructure, biodiversity, attractiveness, and governance [18,40].…”
