Proportion of extended-spectrum ß-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in community setting in Ngaoundere, Cameroon

Abstract: BackgroundThere is no information regarding the resistance mechanisms of extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae in community setting in Cameroon. The current study aimed to determine the proportion of ESBLs in Enterobacteriaceae isolated in the community and to analyse some risk factors associated with ESBL carriage.MethodsFaecal samples were collected from 208 different outpatients and 150 healthy student volunteers between 3 January and 3 April 2009. Enterobacterial isolates resist… Show more

“…The evolution of antibiotic resistance is a continuous threat to human health worldwide [4]. E. coli may act as a reservoir of genes coding for antibiotic resistance and may also be responsible for a group of endogenous infections.…”

“…Group-specific primers used in the study [5]. Much lower rates were obtained in different regions of the world: 12.3% in Saudi Arabia [15], 11% in Egypt [4], 7.3% in Tunisia [16], and 1.8% in Portugal [3]. All these studies investigated the prevalence of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in community settings rather than in HCWs, which may explain the lower rates.…”

“…Indeed, ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae have been associated with serious nosocomial infection outbreaks that lead to prolonged hospital stay, increased morbidity and mortality, and consequently increased healthcare associated costs with limited therapeutic options (Pitout, 2010). Increasing rate of community-acquired infections caused by ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae has, however, been recently reported (Lonchel et al, 2012), representing a potential reservoir for ESBL producers.…”

“…[2,[6][7][8] Few studies have been done on ESBL however they only looked at intestinal carriage. [9][10][11] The prevalence of CTX-M in E. coli strains responsible for community-acquired UTI in Cameroon or Central Africa has not been documented. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of bla CTX-M-type in E. coli strains in community-acquired urinary tract infections in women as well as its risk factors in Cameroon.…”
