Propolis and its direct and indirect hypoglycemic effect

Abstract: Propolis means a gum that is gathered by bees from various plants. It is strongly adhesive resinous substance, collected, transformed, and used by bees to seal holes in their honeycombs. Bees use it to seal holes in their honeycombs, smooth out internal walls, as well as to cover carcasses of intruders who died inside the hive in order to avoid their decomposition. Propolis also protects the colony from diseases because of its antiseptic efficacy and antimicrobial properties. It also has been reported to posse… Show more

“…Lipid disorders assume a position of utmost importance in patients with diabetes, because of the high risk of microvascular disease in this condition but administration of N. propolis to the rats was able to reverse hyperlipidemia seen in the diabetic rats. Similar reports of Al-Hariri [ 29 ] and El-Sayed et al . [ 31 ] shows that treatment with propolis can reduce the TG and serum cholesterol level in diabetics.…”

“…In the propolis treated groups, despite the initial hyperglycemia, the antioxidants present in propolis were able to prevent oxidative stress effect of hyperglycemia on the liver and pancreas, this finding is in line with the reports of Al-Hariri et al . [ 29 ] who reported the efficacy of Arabian propolis in hyperglycemia. Hypoglycemic agents exact their effects via direct or indirect mechanisms in diabetes rats [ 30 ].…”

“…Moreover, administration of PRS and L. acidophilus prevented rats against CCl4-induced hyperglycemia. Even though the presence of bioactive components preventing beta-cell apoptosis and enhancing insulin secretion has been hypothesized, 29 the precise molecular mechanism has not been deciphered so far. The stimulation of GLUT4 translocation in skeletal muscle, which enhanced glucose uptake, 30 the down regulation of glucose-6-phosphatase, 31 as well as the modulation of the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities through the NF-κB pathway 32 have been proposed however.…”
