Propionic acid production by extractive fermentation. I. Solvent considerations

Abstract: Solvent selection for extractive fermentation for propionic acid was conducted with three systems: Alamine 304‐1 (trilaurylamine) in 2‐octanol, 1‐dodecanol, and Witcohol 85 NF (oleyl alcohol). Among them, the solvent containing 2‐octanol exhibited the highest partition coefficient in acid extraction, but it was also toxic to propionibacteria. The most solvent‐resistant strain among five strains of the microorganism was selected. Solvent toxicity was eliminated via two strategies: entrapment of dissolved toxic … Show more

“…It was shown that the recovery with reactive extraction was significantly influenced by the concentration and type of the acid (Gu et al, 1998;Martı et al, 2011;Martı and Gürkan, 2015). Figure 3 shows that the recovery efficiencies were influenced in different ways by initial FA concentrations when octanol or SFO was selected as the organic phase diluent.…”

“…Efforts have also been made towards applying the products partitioning concept to propionic acid fermentation (Gu et al, 1998(Gu et al, , 1999Jin and Yang, 1998). Hollow-fiber membrane extractors were used to prevent direct contact between the organic and the aqueous phases.…”

“…The extraction of carboxylic acids from fermentation media has been widely investigated . In some of the proposed processes, amines were used for reactive extraction of the acids . The concept of these processes can be transferred and adapted to extract amines with acids as reactive extractant.…”

“…In addition, the price of the solvent must be taken into account, since a certain amount of the solvent will be lost during the separation process and needs to be continuously replaced for compensation. Based on these aspects the diluents kerosene and oleyl alcohol were selected, and have already been used in various biocompatible separation processes …”
