Propionibacterium acnes-associated sarcoidosis complicated by acute bird-related hypersensitivity pneumonitis

Abstract: Background The number of reports on sarcoidosis complicated by hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is limited, and most describe cases complicated by chronic bird-related HP. Here, we present for the first time a case with Propionibacterium acnes-associated sarcoidosis complicated by acute bird-related HP. Case presentation A 62-year-old man with a past medical history of sarcoidosis was admitted to our department, and chest computed tomography showed diffuse ground-glass opacities, which appeared as he rapidl… Show more

“…Localization of the immunohistochemical signals to C. acnes in sarcoid granulomas is shown in Figure 1 . Numerous case reports have described C. acnes detection in the granulomas of patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ], cutaneous sarcoidosis [ 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ], nasal sarcoidosis [ 32 ], and neurosarcoidosis [ 33 , 34 ]. The term “ C. acnes -associated sarcoidosis” is applied to cases in which C. acnes is detected in granulomas via immunohistochemistry using the PAB antibody [ 35 ].…”

“…Many case reports with P. acnes detected in granulomas, including pulmonary sarcoidosis [ 54 , 55 ], cutaneous sarcoidosis [ 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 , 62 ], nasal sarcoidosis [ 63 ], and neurosarcoidosis [ 64 , 65 ], have been published. These cases in which P. acnes was identified in granulomas by IHC with the PAB antibody were recently termed P. acnes -associated sarcoidosis [ 55 , 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 ].…”
