Currently, information about the psychometric properties of the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) in family caregivers of children with cancer is not available; thus, there is no empirical evidence of its validity and reliability to support its use in this population in Mexico or in other countries. This study examined the psychometric properties of the BAI in family caregivers of children with cancer and pursued four objectives: to determine the factor structure of the BAI, estimate its internal consistency reliability, describe the distribution of BAI scores and the level of anxiety in the sample and test its concurrent validity in relation to depression and resilience. This cross-sectional study was carried out with convenience sampling. A sociodemographic questionnaire, the BAI, the Beck Depression Inventory and the Measurement Scale of Resilience were administered to an incidental sample of 445 family caregivers of children with cancer hospitalized at the National Institute of Health in Mexico City. Confirmatory factor analysis using the maximum likelihood method was performed to determine the factor structure and exploratory factor analysis using axis factorization with oblique rotation was conducted. The two-, three- and four-factor models originally proposed for the BAI did not hold. The exploratory factor analysis showed a model of two correlated factors (physiological and emotional symptoms). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a lack of discriminant validity between these two factors and supported a single-factor model. The internal consistency of the scale reduced to 11 items (BAI-11) was good (alpha = 0.89). The distribution of BAI-11 scores was skewed to the left. High levels of symptoms of anxiety were present in 49.4% of caregivers. The scale was positively correlated with depression and negatively correlated with resilience. These findings suggest that a reduced single-factor version of the BAI is valid for Mexican family caregivers of children with cancer.

Different types of violence have been present in Mexico but there have been few studies that have analyzed their relationship with mental health in adolescents, especially in cities with high rates of social violence. It is important to compare different violence types and their relationship with mental health since not all relationships are the same. It appears that social violence has a stronger relationship with mental health, and for this reason it receives more attention, but other types of violence have a stronger relationship and do not receive as much attention. Chihuahua has been one of the most violent states in Mexico, and Juarez has been the most violent city in the world in 2009 and 2010. The purpose of the study is to compare the relationship of different types of violence (social, cyberbullying, partner violence, and child abuse and neglect) with mental health indicators (depression, anxiety, stress, self-esteem, and paranoid thoughts). There were 526 high school students, from the cities of Juarez ( n = 282) and Chihuahua ( n = 244). The mean age was 16.5 ( SD = 1.4) years and 50.6% reported being males. The relationships among the variables were analyzed using Pearson’s correlations and multiple linear regressions. Both cities that have experienced social violence like carjacking, kidnapping, and sexual assault, but they have very small or no relationships with mental health indicators. Other types of violence have stronger correlations. Our findings suggest that interventions should not focus only in preventing and dealing with social violence, but that other types of violence must also be addressed in adolescents.

La alimentación desempeña un papel significativo en nuestras vidas como individuos, ya que no solo satisface una de nuestras necesidades básicas, sino que también está arraigada en las prácticas sociales. A pesar de que se ha investigado en gran medida, hay escasa evidencia sobre cómo afecta emocionalmente y modera nuestro comportamiento alimentario. El objetivo de esta investigación fue identificar las diferencias en la alimentación emocional de acuerdo con el diagnóstico de ansiedad y depresión en una muestra de adultos mexicanos. Se contó con la participación de 814 personas. Se trató de un estudio cuantitativo de tipo descriptivo donde se aplicó una batería compuesta por el Inventario de Depresión de Beck-II (Beck et al., 1996), Inventario de Ansiedad de Beck (Beck et al., 1988) y la Escala de Alimentación Emocional (Rojas y García-Méndez, 2017). Los resultados indican que las mujeres presentan una mayor prevalencia de ansiedad y depresión; en cuanto al grado de estos diagnósticos, se encontraron diferencias significativas en todos los factores de la Alimentación Emocional a excepción de los factores familia y cultura. En conclusión, el factor emoción muestra una mayor incidencia en personas con niveles moderados y severos de ansiedad y depresión, lo que indica que tienden a comer más en respuesta a emociones negativas como una estrategia de afrontamiento.
