Properties of water‐soluble acrylic copolymer/montmorillonite nanocomposites for warp sizing

Abstract: Acrylic copolymer/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites for warp sizing were prepared in the presence of Na þ -MMT by the in situ intercalative polymerization of acrylic acid, acrylamide, and methyl acrylate in water solution. The properties of the solution and cast film were tested according to an application in sizing process of the nanocomposite size with various MMT contents. The results indicate that, for an exfoliated structure corresponding to the MMT content increasing to 7 wt %, the performance paramet… Show more

“…Hygroscopicity of the composite films was determined by equilibrium moisture adsorption of the films at 20°C for 1 wk at a series of RHs adjusted by different saturated salt solutions 4, 7. Each film sample was tested ten times and the average moisture sorption was calculated.…”

“…Different types of chemicals, such as modified starches 2, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) 3, acrylates 4, and so on 5, are used as textile sizing agents. Among them modified starches are known to be the most effective type of size base materials 2, because of their renewability with low price and biodegradability 6, and modest film‐forming performance 7.…”

“…Copolymers of AM and AA salts or substituted amides and AA salts are widely used to prepare inorganic polymer/layered nanocomposites . A water‐soluble acrylic copolymer/montmorillonite nanocomposite for warp sizing was synthesized by way of in situ intercalative polymerization of AA, AM and methyl acrylate in water with various contents of the clay . These copolymers showed good dispersion properties for metal and metal oxide nanoparticles …”

“…The sizes are the copolymers of various acrylate monomers with a small amount of acrylic acid (AA), mainly manufactured through solution or emulsion polymerization. 2,3 The purpose of using AA in monomer formulation is to make the copolymers soluble or at least dispersible in water so as to facilitate size mixing and desizing. In the copolymerization process, the acrylate and AA monomers are converted into corresponding units (named acrylate and AA units, respectively) along the copolymeric chains of acrylate copolymers.…”
