Properties of the gold–sulphur interface: from self-assembled monolayers to clusters

Abstract: The gold-sulphur interface of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) was extensively studied some time ago. More recently tremendous progress has been made in the preparation and characterization of thiolate-protected gold clusters. In this feature article we address different properties of the two systems such as their structure, the mobility of the thiolates on the surface and other dynamical aspects, the chirality of the structures and characteristics related to it and their vibrational properties. SAMs and clust… Show more

“…Diffusion of Au atoms was also suggested in [44], though the mechanism suggested there cannot apply here as our NPoM geometry constrains the molecular layer. Recent experiments show that thiol-SAM/ gold interfaces typically reconstruct via S─Au─S staples that pull atoms from the surface [48,49], thus mixing molecular and metal atom dynamics. Similar effects for both pulsed and CW excitation are seen in the Raman and scattering, except that their threshold I C is at 100-fold lower average power for the pulsed case compared to the CW case [ Fig.…”

“…[7][8] Heteroatoms have been introduced in the core and staples of gold nanoclusters to impart enhanced chemical and physical properties. [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17] Doping increased the nanocluster surface flexibility and therefore lowered the racemization temperature of chiral Au 38 .…”

“…1c). Since the surface mobility of thiol-terminated molecules is suppressed for multi-facet gold nanospheres and for high-molecular-mass ligands, and since their lateral motion is generally slow 26 , we expected that in a poor solvent, stretched polystyrene-50K molecules would be grafted to the nanosphere surface, as is shown in Fig. 1a, bottom.…”
