Properties of the amorphous-nanocrystalline Gd2O3 powder prepared by pulsed electron beam evaporation

Abstract: Abstract-An amorphous-nanocrystalline Gd 2 O 3 powder with a specific surface area of 155 m 2 /g has been prepared using pulsed electron beam evaporation in vacuum. The nanopowder consists of 20 to 500 nm agglomerates formed by crystalline nanoparticles (3-12 nm in diameter) connected by amorphous-nanoc rystalline strands. At room temperature, the Gd 2 O 3 nanopowder exhibits a paramagnetic behavior. The phase transformations occurring in the powder have been investigated using differential scanning calorimetr… Show more

“…Various groups have employed some wet chemical methods to coat silica spheres with nanoparticles of noble metals, rare earth oxides and transition metal oxides. [3][4][5] Sol-gel technology appears a possible tool in order to produce composite materials constituting of rare earth oxide embedded into an inert host. Our goal is to investigate the incorporation of Gd 2 O 3 in silica matrix and to study the effect of sintering temperature on the prepared composites.…”

“…Moreover, RE‐doped glasses find application as scintillator in medical, industrial, and security radiation control . There are many approaches to fabricate Gd 2 O 3 materials such as chemical vapor deposition, pulsed electron beam evaporation, hydrothermal, laser ablation solid‐state reaction, flame spray pyrolysis, and sol–gel . In case of photonics applications, silica with its high softening temperature and lower index of refraction may be an ideal host matrix for the RE elements and their oxides.…”
