Properties of Polystyrene/Acrylic Acid Membranes After Sulphonation Reactions

Abstract: Sulphonation reaction in styrenic membranes is a common method used to graft ionic groups needed to enhance proton conductivity in polymeric electrolytes (PEM). A synthesized copolymer of styrene and acrylic acid (94/6 % mol) was partially crosslinked using a trifunctional monomer, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) (0.01% mol), like a crosslinking agent. The obtained material was subjected to different sulphonation reactions in order to prepare several PEM membranes. The sulphonation reactions used s… Show more

“…Dielectric spectroscopy measurements show that both the electrical conductivity and dielectric constant values of the polystyrene particles increase with longer sulfonation time. This result is expected because the degree of sulfonation increases with reaction time [ 51 ], allowing more water to adsorb to the PS particles [ 45 , 52 ] and thus enhance protonic conductivity [ 53 ]. In our previous research [ 42 ], we validated the influence of water content on the dielectric properties of sulfonated PS particles.…”

“…and W = weight of dry membrane [9] WU was measured by immersing the membranes in deionized water during 24 h and then weighed; after removal of water on the surface they were kept in an oven at 150°C during 24 h and weighed again. The percentage of water absorption was calculated by differences between dry/wet weights [8].…”
