The biology of the mitochondrial electron transport chain is summarized. Our approach to the mechanism of uncouplers, inhibitors, and toxins is based on electron transfer (ET) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Extensive supporting evidence, which is broadly applicable, is cited. ROS can be generated either endogenously or exogenously. Generally, the reactive entities arise via redox cycling by ET functionalities, such as, quinones (or precursors), metal compounds, imines (or iminiums), and aromatic nitro compounds (or reduced metabolites). In most cases, the ET functions are formed metabolically. The toxic substances belong to many categories, e.g., medicinals, industrial chemicals, abused drugs, and pesticides. Structure-activity relationships are presented from the ET-ROS perspective, and also quantitatively. Evidence for the theoretical framework is provided by the protective effect of antioxidants. Among other topics addressed are proton flux, membrane pores, and apoptosis. There is support for the thesis that mitochondrial insult may contribute to illnesses and aging.

Vitomil Zupan (1914–1987), a former partisan and political prisoner, and Lojze Kovačič (1928–2004) who was exiled as a German speaking child with his family from Switzerland to Yugoslavia, rank among the most outstanding autobiographers in modern Slovene literature. After a brief theoretical discussion on ethics and a dialogue on autobiographical discourse, the paper discusses the intersections and dialogical interplay between the real author, the writer, the narrator, the characters and the reader in their writings since the 1970s, taking into account the background of their personal experiences and the political, ideological and social conditions represented in their texts. As they pursued different concepts of self-representation, special emphasis is placed on ethical issues that derive from the autobiographical genre, respectively, from the specifics of the ethics of the told and the ethics of the telling as well as on the significance of ethical questions within the aesthetics of their writing. This article was submitted to the European Journal of Life Writing on April 16th, 2016, and published on July 17th, 2017.

Η διδακτορική αυτή διατριβή, η οποία ως στόχο της είχε την παρασκευή ημιαγώγιμων πολυφαινυλενίων και αγώγιμων συστημάτων πολυφαινυλενίων-ινών άνθρακα καθώς επίσης και την εξέταση της δομής, των ιδιοτήτων και των κατευθύνσεων εφαρμογών τους, εκπονήθηκε στο Εργαστήριο Ειδικής Χημικής Τεχνολογίας του Τμήματος Χημικών Μηχανικών του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου κατά τη χρονική περίοδο από Απρίλιο 1993-Απραιο 1997.Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω θερμά τον επιβλέποντα Καθηγητή κ. Ι. Σιμιτζή για την υπόδειξη του θέματος, τις πολύτιμες συμβουλές του, το ενδιαφέρον και τη συμπαράσταση που έδειξε σε όλη τη διάρκεια της διατριβής.
