“…There are several powder metallurgy methods to synthesize the bulk Ti 2 AlN MAX phase, starting with the combination of Ti/Al (using N 2 atmosphere), Ti/AlN or Ti/Al/TiN as raw materials, including hot isostatic pressing (HIP) [ 12 , 13 ], self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ], mechanical alloying (MA) and hot pressing (HP) [ 18 ], SHS and HP [ 19 ], HP [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ], reaction sintering [ 24 , 25 ] and spark plasma sintering (SPS) [ 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]. Among them, the SPS demonstrates economic and technological advantages in the processing and formation of single phases, such as shorter soaking time, lower sintering temperatures, higher density and densification rate, improved mechanical properties, and refined grain sizes [ 31 ].…”

“…Although Ti 2 AlC 0.5 N 0.5 in Table 3 has higher mechanical properties than both Ti 2 AlC and Ti 2 AlN, the grain size of Ti 2 AlN was much larger than those of Ti 2 AlC and Ti 2 AlC 0.5 N 0.5 [110]. It has been reported that the Vickers hardness of the HP-ed Ti 2 AlN bulk samples using SHS-ed Ti 2 AlN powders with a size of 17 μm reaches 5.8 GPa [118]. The SPS-ed Ti 2 AlN bulk samples with a grain size of 5~10 μm has a Vickers hardness higher than 6 GPa [119].…”

“…The method and materials produced are described in details in the section ‘SHS-ceramics’ of this review. Another promising method for densification of CS products is a combination of SHS with HP and HIP [32–35]. SHS with extrusion is an approach for the production of fully dense materials with large aspect ratios [3638].…”
