Properties of High-Performance Concretes made of Black Sand at High Temperature

Abstract: To modify high-performance concrete (HPC) fireproofing properties, black sand (BS) was partially substituted as fine aggregate at various levels. This study aims at evaluating the BS reliability in improving HPC durability properties for various construction applications based on its unique heavy minerals. To achieve this, five HPC series blends were setup to substitute fine aggregate independently with BS. Substitution percentages ranged from 15 to 100% with consistent supplementary cementing materials (SCMs)… Show more

“…Greyish-yellow type BS from the Baltium shore, Egypt, with a specific gravity of 2.65 was used in all mix sets, except the control set. Figure 2 A shows the BS used in this study [ 41 ], and the BS had particle sizes between 0.15 and 0.3 mm, with a 2.2 fineness modulus and 92 cm 2 /gm surface area. Figure 2 and Figure 3 show the analysis of X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) for BS used, as illustrated in Figure 3 and Figure 4 [ 41 ].…”

“…Cement paste microstructure and morphology can be tracked via SEM analysis of changes in the C-S-H phase of hydration [18][19][20]. Also, SEM analysis can be used to characterize the pore structures in porous materials by calculating the total porosity and pore size distributions.…”
