Properties of high-density matter in neutron stars

Abstract: This short review aims at giving a brief overview of the various states of matter that have been suggested to exist in the ultra-dense centers of neutron stars. Particular emphasis is put on the role of quark deconfinement in neutron stars and on the possible existence of compact stars made of absolutely stable strange quark matter (strange stars). Astrophysical phenomena, which distinguish neutron stars from quark stars, are discussed and the question of whether or not quark deconfinement may occur in neutron… Show more

“…In the near future a number of new astrophysical instruments will provide various information on neutron stars (see the recent review [62]). In particular, the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) [63] to be launched in 2016 is expected to discover tens of thousands of neutron stars and help understanding their core phenomena and to unravel footprints of parity breaking due to pseudoscalar condensation.…”

“…In particular, model of neutron star core, consisting of strange quark matter, is discuss and develop at present time [2]. Neutrino cooling of neutron star core is very important, because of such a cooling is responsible for determination and calculation theoretically of neutron star cooling curve [3].…”

“…The question of whether or not quark matter exists in neutron stars has received renewed interest (see Refs., [1][2][3] and references therein) by the discovery of the two massive neutron stars (NS) J1614-2230 (1.97±0.04M (see Ref. 4 ), recently updated to 1.928 ± 0.017M (see Ref.…”
