Properties of flavonoids in the treatment of bladder cancer (Review)

Abstract: Given its high recurrence and rapid progress, bladder cancer (BLCA) treatment has become a major problem for clinicians. BLCA is difficult to control even with surgical resection and extensive use of chemotherapeutic drugs. The non-toxicity and ease of accessibility of natural compounds have attracted much attention in recent years. Flavonoids serve an essential role given their antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer and cardiovascular properties. They are mainly divided into several subclasses; flavones, flav… Show more

“…Amongst these, flavonoids are a dominant class of natural products widely present in plants and primarily known for their cardio-protective, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, and anti-cancer properties, the activity of which depends largely on the structure as well as the degree of oxidation, unsaturation, and polymerization of the “C” ring [ 10 , 11 ]. More importantly, flavonoids bring less psychological stress and financial burden to patients due to their harmlessness and wide availability [ 12 ]. To our knowledge, Sakuranetin is recently identified as an imperative plant flavonoid with anti-cancer, anti-protozoal, anti-microbial, and anti-viral properties, and its glycoside, termed Sakuranin, is first isolated from the bark of Prunus pseudo-cerasus [ 13 ].…”

“…Additionally, antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene, may protect against cancer by helping to protect the cellular system from oxidative damage [ 31 ]. Phytochemicals such as flavonoids and polyphenols have anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative effects, which could contribute to their protective role against bladder cancer development [ 31 , 32 ].…”

“…The impact of flavonoids on breast cancer has been investigated both in vivo and in vitro; however, a comprehensive analysis of these effects has not yet been conducted. Various categories of flavonoids have been found to disrupt breast cancer progression through biological pathways involving reactive oxygen species (ROS), apoptosis, ferroptosis, cancer stem cells (CSCs), epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and cell cycle arrest [44].…”
