Pure bitumen is not suitable for heavy traffic loads; hence modifiers are used to improve the bitumen performance. Recently, cup lump rubber (CLR) has become a preferred modifier due to its outstanding performance and less cost. However, little is known about the interactions between CLR and bitumen. Thus, this study investigates the behavior of bitumen with CLR. Four percentages of CLR (2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10.0% by weight of bitumen) were used to modify conventional 60/70 penetration grade bitumen. The modified bitumen was evaluated through different laboratory testing such as dynamic shear rheometer, rotational viscosity, softening point, bending beam rheometer, ductility, and elastic recovery. The testing results show that the addition of CLR increased the bitumen's rutting resistance by 3 PG grades at high temperatures. At low pavement temperatures, the cup lump rubber modified bitumen (CMB) can withstand up to −34°C. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis shows that the Aromaticity index at 1600 cm -1 rose as the CLR percentage increased, indicating the formation of a binder with a compact structure. This is expected to improve the elasticity of bitumen through π -π interactions. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) results showed the Catana phase increased in size and quantity at 5.0% and 7.5% CLR content. While contact angle measurement revealed that the binders are hydrophobic and tend to repel the dropped water on the bitumen surface.

Conventional bitumen pavement is no longer suitable for handling increasing loads and weather variations, which cause road deterioration, Thus, the modification of bitumen has been suggested to counter this issue. This study provides a detailed assessment of various additives for modifying natural rubber-modified bitumen used in road construction. This work will focus on the use of additives with cup lump natural rubber (CLNR), which has recently started to gain attention among researchers, especially in rubber-producing countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Furthermore, this paper aims to briefly review how the addition of additives or modifiers helps elevate the performance of bitumen by highlighting the significant properties of modified bitumen after the addition of modifiers. Moreover, the amount and method of application of each additive are discussed further to obtain the optimum value for future implementation. On the basis of past studies, this paper will review the utilisation of several types of additives, including polyphosphoric acid, Evotherm, mangosteen powder, trimethyl-quinoline and sulphur, and the application of xylene and toluene to ensure the homogeneity of the rubberised bitumen. Numerous studies were conducted to verify the performance of various types and compositions of additives, particularly in terms of physical and rheological properties. In general, additives enhance the properties of conventional bitumen. Future research should investigate CLNR because studies on its utilisation are limited.

Pre-Vulcanized Liquid Natural Rubber (PVLNR) modified asphalt leaves problems such as increasing the viscosity, thereby increasing the mixing and compaction temperature up to 175 °C, accelerating the ageing process. Therefore it is necessary to do developing methods using PVLNR at lower mixing temperatures requires warm-mix technology. This study aimed to evaluate the use of PVLNR modified asphalt in warm mix asphalt (WMA). Laboratory testing includes rheological modified asphalt, the workability analysis, Resilient Modulus and Deformation. The results showed that the PVLNR content decreased penetration increased the softening point and asphalt viscosity. In addition, additive Rediset LQ plays a role in reducing asphalt viscosity. The advantages of PVLNR modified asphalt are increasing elastic recovery, saving asphalt consumption and increasing the Modulus of hot mix asphalt rubber (HAR) and warm mix asphalt rubber (WAR). In addition, the Rutting resistance of WAR is better than that of HMA and WMA.
