Properties of broad bean yellow band virus, a possible new tobravirus

Abstract: SUMMARYA virus was transmitted from broad bean plants in Apulia (Southern Italy) with leaves showing yellow rings, line patterns or yellow vein banding and malformations and necrosis of pods. Symptoms in some, but not all, test plants were similar to those induced by tobraviruses. Purified virus preparations contained two classes of rod‐shaped particles containing c. 5% nucleic acid with sedimentation coefficients of 186S and 276S. After centrifugation to equilibrium in CsCl gradients, two components were reso… Show more

“…Robinson, personal communication). These plants were also resistant to BBYBV, which has substantial nucleotide sequence homology with PEBV but is serologically unrelated (22,23). However, 54.3 plants were not resistant to infection by either PRV (24) or the 16 isolate of TRV (25).…”

“…N5 is the isolate from narcissus plant N5, described by Harrison et al (1983). The isolates of PEBV used were SHE (PEBV-SHE) and SP5 (PEBV-SP5), which are isolates of the British serotype from pea (Robinson & Harrison, 1985a), El 16, an isolate of the Dutch serotype from pea (kindly supplied by L. Bos; PEBV-D) and BBYBV, an isolate from Viciafaba in Italy (Russo et aL, 1984;PEBV-BBYB). Unless otherwise stated, TRV was strain SYM (Kurppa et al, 1981); other strains were as used by Robinson & Harrison (1985a).…”

“…BBYBV RNA (Russo et aL, 1984) was a gift from Dr M. Russo, Dipartimento di Patologia Vegetale, Bari, Italy; tobacco mosaic and cowpea mosaic virus (TMV and CPMV) RNAs were kindly supplied by Drs T. M. A. Wilson and G. P. Lomonossoff (John Innes Institute) respectively.…”

“…Broad bean yellow band virus (BBYBV) has genomic RNAs of Mr 2"48 × 106 (RNA-1) and 1"06 × 106 (RNA-2) (Russo et al, 1984) which can form pseudorecombinants with PEBV RNA (Robinson & Harrison, 1985b), which suggests that the two viruses are closely related. BBYBV RNA-2 encodes a coat protein of approx.…”
