Properties of Banana (Cavendish spp.) Starch Film Incorporated with Banana Peel Extract and Its Application

Abstract: The objective of this study was to develop an active banana starch film (BSF) incorporated with banana peel extract. We compared the film’s properties with commercial wrap film (polyvinyl chloride; PVC). Moreover, a comparison of the quality of minced pork wrapped during refrigerated storage (7 days at ± 4 ℃) was also performed. The BSF with different concentrations of banana peel extract (0, 1, 3, and 5 (%, w/v)) showed low mechanical properties (tensile strength (TS): 4.43–31.20 MPa and elongation at break (… Show more

“…This is an important parameter of high molecular weight pectin; high equivalent weight could occur as a consequence of higher partial degradation of pectin (24) .Thus, unripe banana has a high equivalent weight as compared to ripe. The equivalent weight of pectin was found at 1428.57 g/ml in a banana peel.…”

“…( Oberoi et al, 2011 ; Ingale et al, 2014 ; Naranjo et al, 2014 ). Banana starch also plays an important role in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries ( Ramírez-Hernández et al, 2017 ; Arias et al, 2021 ; Taweechat et al, 2021 ; Thanyapanich et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Furthermore, the films incorporated with the highest concentrations of oregano essential oil presented antimicrobial activity in the tests, thus demonstrating the potential of starch-based films and the natural compounds utilized in this study on meat preservation. In a similar study, Taweechat et al [73] obtained promising results for the conservation of food by using films produced with banana starch incorporated with banana peel extract in the conservation of minced pork. Boeira et al [74] developed a film based on corn starch and extract of corn stigma that demonstrated antioxidant properties and reduced lipid oxidation by 60%.…”
