Propagation of extensional waves in a piezoelectric semiconductor rod

Abstract: We studied the propagation of extensional waves in a thin piezoelectric semiconductor rod of ZnO whose c-axis is along the axis of the rod. The macroscopic theory of piezoelectric semiconductors was used which consists of the coupled equations of piezoelectricity and the conservation of charge. The problem is nonlinear because the drift current is the product of the unknown electric field and the unknown carrier density. A perturbation procedure was used which resulted in two one-way coupled linear problems of… Show more

“…However, it is noted that the approximate analytical solutions can be obtained by neglecting part of weak interactions as reported in Refs. [29]- [31]. The advantage of these analytical solutions is that they are helpful to reveal the essence of some physical phenomena, although the scope of applications of the introduced assumptions needs to be further verified.…”

“…As an approximation often used in Refs. [12] and [29]- [31], the charge on the right-hand side of Eq. (1b) is neglected to decouple the problem into two one-way coupled problems, i.e., the pure piezoelectric problem and the continuity equation for ∆n.…”

“…Using the wave-mode method, the propagation of the Rayleigh waves in an elastic half-space with a PSC thin film was investigated by Tian et al [10]. Besides, the propagation of in-plane elastic waves in a PSC slab sandwiched [11], SH waves and Lamb waves in a PSC plate [7,12], SH waves in multilayered PSC plates [13], in-plane waves in a nanoscale PSC-layered periodic composites [14] and extensional waves in a PSC rod [15,16] also have been investigated. In those studies, however, the PN junction which is an important characteristic of the PSC has hardly gotten concerned.…”

“…For instance, Gao and Wang analyzed the induced piezopotential in a laterally bent ZnO nanowire using the semicoupled model. Based on the fully coupled nonlinear model, Zhang et al investigated longitudinal waves propagating in an infinitely long PS rod, and studied the electromechanical fields of the equilibrium state in ZnO rods with excessive electrons in a previous study . With the fully coupled nonlinear finite element method, Araneo et al numerically analyzed a quasi‐1D ZnO nanowire with floating electrode under axial stresses .…”
