Propagation Effects in Induction Logging

Abstract: Induction logging utilizes the component of induced receiver coil voltage that is in phase with transmitter coil current as a measure of the conductivity of material surrounding the coils. This paper considers the problem of the field of a vertical magnetic dipole in a horizontally stratified, isotropic conductive formation and shows the receiver coil voltage can be considered as composed of responses due to electromagnetic waves in the formation. These waves which experience attenuation and phase shift as the… Show more

“…Geophysics provides a means of increasing the sampling radius of a hole, though indirectly. One well-developed method is induction logging, described by Doll (1946), Duesterhoeft (1961), and Kaufman (1966). The in-hole tool consists of two coils, one that generates an electromagnetic field and the other that detects the secondary magnetic field from eddy currents in the rock.…”

“…where σ a is defined as apparent conductivity and is a function of the geometry factor. Detailed discussion on the geometry factor is given in references (Duesterhoeft, 1961;Duesterhoeft and Smith, 1962). The direct-coupled signal V x does not contain any useful information but presents a large background noise in the received signal.…”
