Propagation and Effects of a Mesoscale Gravity Wave Over a Weakly-Stratified Nocturnal Boundary Layer During the SABLES2006 Field Campaign

Abstract: During the SABLES2006 (Stable Atmospheric Boundary Layer Experiment in Spain 2006) field campaign, a gravity-wave episode was observed on the night of July 11 by the microbarometers deployed at the surface and on the 100-m tower. The high-amplitude, low-frequency periodic pressure fluctuations were very well correlated with the wind speed and direction. Data from neighbouring automatic stations showed that the gravity wave was not local, but long-lived and mesoscale. The propagation of the wave over the experi… Show more

“…Descriptions of different wavelet transforms are numerous in the literature (Daubechies, 1992;Torrence and Compo, 1998). In this work we employ the Morlet wavelet, a complex function consisting of a plane wave modulated by a Gaussian function (Torrence and Compo, 1998;Cuxart et al, 2002;Viana et al, 2009).…”

“…They have been observationally analysed using different approaches (Ralph et al, 1997;Doyle and Durran, 2002;Viana et al, 2009Viana et al, , 2010Viana et al, , 2012Sun et al, 2012;Román-Cascón et al, 2015a). All these studies illustrate the difficulties in determining the origin and formation mechanisms of GWs, their importance as sources of momentum and heat transport (Sukoriansky et al, 2009;Fernando and Weil, 2010) and the necessity of their accurate parameterization in NWP models (Fritts, 2003;Kim and Hong, 2009;Belušić and Mahrt, 2012;Nappo, 2012;Sun et al, 2015b).…”
