Prooxidant Effects of Verbascoside, a Bioactive Compound from Olive Oil Mill Wastewater, onIn VitroDevelopmental Potential of Ovine Prepubertal Oocytes and Bioenergetic/Oxidative Stress Parameters of Fresh and Vitrified Oocytes

Abstract: Verbascoside (VB) is a bioactive polyphenol from olive oil mill wastewater with known antioxidant activity. Oxidative stress is an emerging problem in assisted reproductive technology (ART). Juvenile ART is a promising topic because, in farm animals, it reduces the generation gap and, in human reproductive medicine, it helps to overcome premature ovarian failure. The aim of this study was to test the effects of VB on the developmental competence of ovine prepubertal oocytes and the bioenergetic/oxidative stres… Show more

“…Although tea polyphenols have antioxidative potential, it has been shown to become prooxidant, proinflammatory, and even procarcinogenic agents when administered in high doses to mice . Our finding that GTE supplements increased markers of oxidative stress such as 4‐HNE and iNOS is consistent with recent studies showing that high polyphenol concentrations in cells and tissues can be prooxidative .…”

“…We showed Verbascoside does not statistically affect cellular survival and viability according to Figure 2. These observations were consistent with those reported Aleo et al 33 Dell'Aquila et al 34 indicating revealed a significant antioxidant effect of Verbascosid. 18,33,34 In 2013, Potapovich et al 35 showed Verbascoside offers additional skin-protection capacity against harmful ultraviolet radiation and inflammatory insults.…”

“…Previously, several studies have demonstrated the VB capability to induce an increase in catalase and SOD activity. Recently, Dell'Aquila et al [ 56 ] demonstrated that catalase activity significantly increased in VB-exposed oocytes. The same authors suggested that this increase could be due to the potential formation of H 2 O 2 during the oxidation of phenolics, concluding that the stimulating effect of VB on CAT activity may also be related to the observed increase in intracellular ROS levels [ 56 ].…”
