This paper discusses to use of accent reduction software to improve English beginners' pronunciation. The majority of research in computer assisted learning highlighted the use of a computer application in English pronunciation teaching or training. However, most of the studies focus on improving English pronunciation at a university level, while studies to improve English beginners' pronunciation with a software aid is limited. In fact, the foundation of pronunciation skill should be taught earlier to provide better English pronunciation in the future. In this study, the author implemented an accent reduction software to improve the first year Junior High School English pronunciation in Palu, Central Sulawesi. The study used experiment method. A class with 30 English beginner students was administered pronunciation improvement using ELSA Speak software for 16 weeks with 90 minutes duration each meeting. The software was installed in the school desktop and notebook as well as in other mobile devices belong to students to allow independent practices. Meanwhile, a controlled class was taught as usual by an English teacher. A pre-test was given to both classes before the treatment was embarked and after the treatment was completed, a post test was again given to both classes. In addition, survey questionnaires were also distributed to all students after treatment sessions completed to understand their perception on the use of software in teaching pronunciation. Statistical calculation showed that pronunciation achievement of treatment class is significantly higher than control class. Survey results also show that students have higher satisfaction regarding motivation, imitation, flexibility and independence learning.

This contribution describes the robustness evaluation and optimization steps for a speech interface which is suitable for embedded language tutoring with special focus on children's speech. The baseline algorithms are derived from the pronunciation tutoring system AzAR directed to adult learners of German. The first prototype LiSA (2008) -directed to young children starting at 3 years -is currently evaluated and optimized, mainly addressing following issues: (a) the challenge of ASR-based pronunciation assessment for children's speech, (b) the handling of noise and reverberation in an embedded application scenario, and (c) the extraction of additional information such as age or gender. The article summarizes evaluation results of the speech recognizer in laboratory and real-world room environment.

In recent years the application of computer software to the learning process has been found to be an indisputably effective tool supporting the traditional teaching methods. Particular focus has been put on the application of techniques based on speech and language processing to the second language learning. Most of the commercial self-study programs, however, do not allow for introduction of an individualized learning course by the teacher and to concentrate on segmental features only. The paper discusses the use of speech technology in the training of foreign languages' pronunciation and prosody and defines pedagogical requirements for an effective training with CAPT systems. In this context, steps taken in the development of the intelligent tutoring system AzAR3.0 (German 'Automat for accent reduction') in the scope of the Euronounce project (Cylwik et al., 2008) are described with the focus on creation of the linguistic content. In response to the European Union's call for promoting less widely spoken languages, the project focuses on German as a target language for native speakers of Polish, Slovak, Czech, and Russian, and vice versa. The paper presents the design of the speech corpus for the purpose of the tutoring system and the analysis of pronunciation errors. The results of the latter provide information which is important for Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) training on the one hand, and for automatic error detection and feedback generation on the other hand. In the end, Pitch Line software for implementation in the prosody visualization and training module of AzAR3.0 tutoring system is described.
